How to Care for Indoor Plants

Nothing can freshen up your home living space quite like indoor plants. In addition to their attractiveness, they also contribute in improving the quality of the air you breathe. One of the most important things to do to keep your plants healthy and happy is to examine your soil and provide them with the appropriate levels of nutrients, sunlight, and water. If your plants seem dull, we've got excellent tips on indoor plant care to help get your plants back in shape.

How to Care for Indoor Plants

Although all plants share the same requirements for nutrients, water, soil, and light, the requirements for these elements may differ based on the season. Here are some excellent ways to maintain indoor plants all year long:

Spring

Following the winter dormancy, as the days get longer, the temperatures rise, and the house plants begin to develop new growth. It is the perfect opportunity to pot plants which have outgrown their pots--choosing the new pot, which is between 1 and 2 inches wider than the old.

The spring season is also the perfect opportunity to fertilize your garden with about half-strength to give them a boost.

Include your plants in your spring cleaning tasks by gently wiping the waxy leaves with a damp sponge and dusting the delicate leaf using a soft brush. Always support the lower part of the leaf to prevent them from breaking. Remove any yellow leaves and trim long vines that are becoming excessively sagging.

Summer

Be aware of indoor plants during the summer season as they could be scorched if they are left in a window with a sunny view. Summer is the perfect time to plant indoor plants that do not fare well in heat and will enjoy the indoor cooling comfort.

The heat of summer can deprive the plants in your home of water, so it's essential to inspect them every couple of days to see whether they're dry. Make sure to water slowly and thoroughly whenever you need to for the maximum results and to increase the amount of water by placing pots of plants on pebbles that are filled with water or misting regularly.

Fall

Extreme temperature fluctuations between the hours of day and night can be a burden on plants. Introduce plants that were outside to cool down, and inspect closely for pests.

It is better to water your plants less frequently, but you can increase the humidity inside your home to make up for heated, dry air.

If necessary, move plants to ensure that they get enough lighting on days with less light.

Avoid fertilization until spring.

Winter

Prepare to relocate your plants to an alternate location to accommodate their lighting requirements, and make sure they are not near drafty windows or spaces that are not heated.

Be aware of pests since plants are more vulnerable due to a lack of sun along with increased humidity and high temperature.

The practice of overwatering is prevalent during winter and is the most common way to kill your home plants. Place pots of plants in the bathtub or sink and let the excess water be drained before replacing them in the saucer for your plant.
