How to Care for Your Bermuda Grass?

Bermuda grass can withstand heat and drought, but it still needs to be maintained in a healthy state. This includes regular mowing to keep Bermuda grass at an ideal height of one to two-and-a-half inches. These topics are described below.

Mow

  • Aim for a height of one-half to two-and-a-half inches.
  • Mow in the spring when the grass turns green.
  • Regularly mow enough to ensure that the grass blades do not exceed one-third at a given time.
  • Always use a sharp blade mower.
  • Avoid bagging the first spring mow.

Water

  • Only use irrigation when absolutely necessary.
  • Once a week, water deeply to soak the soil to approximately six inches.

Aerate

  • Before fertilizer application, aerate in the early summer.

Weed Control

  • Pre-emergent herbicides can be applied to spring and/or summer weeds following winter injury.
  • Use post-emergence treatments to control broadleaf weeds. Always refer to the label.
  • You should not apply more than 2 to 3 applications per year of herbicide.

Fertilize

  • Proper fertilization begins with a soil test. Based on the results, the appropriate nutrients are chosen and applied. This takes a lot of knowledge, but we can help.
